New Zealand Film Commission

The New Zealand Film Commission is a statutory body created under the New Zealand Film Commission Act 1978. The Commission receives public funding through Vote Arts, Culture and Heritage and the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, with additional income derived from the sale of films in which the Commission has invested.

Purpose/Functions:

The Film Commission is responsible for encouraging the making, promotion, distribution and exhibition of New Zealand films and the development of the New Zealand film industry. It is not a producer of films but supports New Zealand films through investment, marketing, industry support and other activities.

Board Appointments:

The Board has between six and nine members including the Chair.

Members are appointed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage. The term is for up to three years and members are eligible for re-appointment.

Skills and Experience:

As well as the governance skills mentioned on the Governance front page, specific skills required for this Board include:

  • good industry representation
  • business experience
  • film industry expertise.

Time Commitment:

6 one-day meetings per annum (can occasionally last 1.5 days). In addition there are sub committees, which usually operate by conference call.
