New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust Pouhere Taonga is a body corporate established under the Historic Places Act 1993. The Trust has existed in various other forms since 1954.
Purpose/Functions:
The Trust's purpose is to promote the identification, protection, preservation and conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of New Zealand. The Trust has general functions relating to this purpose, including advocacy, fostering public interest and involvement, furnishing advice and assistance, and managing historic places.
The Trust exercises related statutory powers to protect archaeological sites; administers a national register of historic places, historic areas, wahi tapu, and wahi tapu sites; advocates for heritage protection through the resource management process and through provision of advice and assistance to owners and communities; manages a portfolio of heritage properties; and provides for membership of the Trust and related services.
Board Appointments:
The Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of 11 members.
The Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage appoints only the Chair and two Māori members, the latter after consultation with the Minister of Māori Affairs and such national Māori organisations as the Minister thinks fit. Three Board members are elected by the membership of the Trust, with the remaining five being appointed by the Board itself. At least one of these appointed Board members must be Māori.
Skills and Experience:
The skills required include:
- Knowledge of historical and cultural heritage issues
- Experience of conservation and heritage protection
- Advocacy and public communication skills.
Time Commitment:
4-5 times per year over a full day.
