New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

The NZSO is a Crown entity, under the recently enacted New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Act 2004.

Purpose/Function:

The principal objectives of the NZSO include to provide the public of New Zealand with live and recorded performances of symphonic music performed to an international standard by a highly skilled and artistically imaginative orchestra with strong community support. The NZSO is expected to be a leading arts organisation with a role in the development of a distinctly New Zealand cultural environment which promotes and encourages New Zealand musical composition and composers and provides performance opportunities for New Zealand musicians.

Board Appointments:

The Board has between five and eight members including the Chair.

Board members are appointed for up to three years and may be re-appointed. Members are appointed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Skills and Experience:

As well as the governance skills mentioned on the Governance front page, specific skills required for this Board include:

  • an appropriate balance of governance and financial skills
  • awareness of artistic matters relevant to the orchestra.

Time Commitment:

11 monthly meetings per annum. Board members are also required to attend some NZSO events.
