New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is the country's national orchestra and one of the leading three symphony orchestras in Australasia. It was established in 1946.

The NZSO numbers 90 players and performs over 100 concerts each year. These include annual concert seasons of major symphonic repertoire in main centres as well as reduced-orchestra tours encompassing smaller centres. The orchestra is involved in education programmes, plays family and schools concerts, accompanies some opera and ballet productions, contributes to the New Zealand festivals, and undertakes commercial recordings and broadcasts on radio and television. In recent times, the NZSO has toured internationally and recorded film scores. The NZSO also administers the NZSO National Youth Orchestra.

The NZSO was established as a Crown Entity in 2004. The Ministry manages the orchestra's relationship with the Crown and administers government funding. The Chair and members of the governing Board are Ministerial appointments.
