Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Awards (Short Stories)

Frequency: Annual

Value: First prize $10,000 (Katherine Mansfield Award)

Purpose:The short story awards commemorate Katherine Mansfield's contribution to New Zealand literature and assist New Zealand writers to achieve recognition in their own country.

British Council/New Zealand Writers Foundation UK Scholarship

Supported by the British Council and the NZ Writers Guild

Frequency: Not known

Duration: 6-8 weeks

Value: Two scholarships - one place within Working Title's script development team, one place in the development arm of Box TV (includes travel).

Purpose: To encourage professional and creative development in feature film and television scriptwriting and to encourage further opportunities for the recipient through an environment of cultural exchange.

Copyright Licensing Ltd Writer's Award

Frequency: Annual

Value: Two prizes of $35,000 each

Purpose: To provide financial support to enable a writer to devote time to a specific non-fiction writing project. Also covers reasonable research expenses.

Elsie Locke Award

Sponsored by the Library and Information Association of New Zealand

Frequency: Annual

Value: The award consists of a medal, suitably inscribed, and a sum of money to be decided from time to time.

Purpose: The Elsie Locke Award recognises a work that is considered to be a distinguished contribution to non-fiction for young people.

Criteria: Author must be a citizen or resident of New Zealand.

Esther Glenn Award for Children's Literature

Sponsored by the Library and Information Association of New Zealand

Frequency: Annual

Value: The award consists of a medal, suitably inscribed, and a sum of money to be decided from time to time.

Purpose: The award is made to the author of the book which that is considered to be the most distinguished contribution to literature for children.

Criteria: Author must be a citizen or resident of New Zealand.

Māori Literature Awards

These awards are a collaborative initiative between Māori Arts advocate Toi Māori Aotearoa and Māori publishing company Huia (NZ) Ltd.

Frequency: Every two years

Value:

  • The winners of the short story awards (excluding the secondary school category) and film script award will each receive a computer package with software and printer to the retail value of $3000.
  • The first-prize winner of the secondary school category will receive $1000 cash.

Michael King Fellowship

Frequency: Annual

Value: $100,000

Duration: 2 years plus

Criteria: Applicants will have established a strong reputation as a writer; been shortlisted for one or more literary awards; and probably will have achieved at least one other significant literary award or fellowship.

Purpose: The Fellowship will be awarded for a project that will take two years or more to complete.

Montana New Zealand Book Awards

The awards are jointly sponsored by Creative New Zealand's Arts Board and Montana Wines. They are administered by Booksellers New Zealand and managed by a committee of sponsors, authors, booksellers and publishers.

Frequency: Annual

Value: The two main awards:

  • The Deutz Medal for fiction, worth $15,000
  • The Montana Medal for non-fiction, worth $10,000.

The winner must already have won in another category ($5,000), making an aggregated win of $15,000.

Purpose: recognise excellence in, and encourage the reading of, the best books published annually in New Zealand.

New Zealand History Research Trust Fund Awards in History

Frequency: Annual

Value: One major award up to $30,000 and smaller awards of up to $12,000,

Purpose: The awards provide financial assistance for the research and writing of New Zealand history. This assistance can be used to fund research costs (such as photocopying, travel, or equipment) and/or living costs while researching and/or writing. The Fund does not provide assistance for the publication or reprinting of works, nor does it fund research and writing within tertiary institutions.

Criteria: Non-fictional history of significance to New Zealand.

The Richard Webster Popular Fiction Award

Frequency: Annual

Value: First prize $5,000

Purpose:To acknowledge the presence of popular fiction writing in this country and to encourage booksellers to place New Zealand popular fiction on the mass-market shelves.

Criteria:

  • Entries must be the original work of the person submitting them.
  • Entries must not have been previously published, broadcast or accepted for publication in any form including print, digital or on the internet.
  • All entries must be in English.

The Man Booker Prize

Value: The winner receives £21,000 and shortlisted authors £2,500 and both are guaranteed a worldwide audience and a dramatic increase in book sales.

Purpose: The prize aims to reward the best novel of the year.

Criteria: Any full-length novel written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland is eligible.

Commonwealth Writers Prize

Entries for this prize are judged on a regional basis

Frequency: Annual

Value:

  • £10,000 for best book
  • £3,000 for best first book
  • The best book and best first book for the Asia-Pacific region each receive a prize of £1000
  • Best book and best first book chosen go on to compete with the best from the other regions for the overall top prize of £10,000 and £3000 respectively.

Criteria: Any work of prose fiction is eligible, i.e. a novel or collection of short stories. Drama and poetry are ineligible. The work must have been written by a citizen of the Commonwealth.

International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

Frequency: Annual

Value: Є100.000

The award will be awarded in full to the author of the winning novel where that novel is written and published in the English language. If the winning novel is written in a language other than English but published in English translation the award shall be awarded as to €75,000 thereof to the author and €25,000 thereof to the translator.

Purpose: Will be presented for a novel of high literary merit written in the English language, or written in any other language and published in English translation.

  • Tasmania Pacific Fiction Prize - $40,000

Purpose:

  • To develop a culturally significant event that will sustain a high national profile and maintain a high status within the arts community and the broader public,

Criteria:
