Louis Johnson New Writers' Bursary
Funded principally by Creative New Zealand plus interest from a bequest from the Louis Johnson Estate.
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 6 months
Value: $18,000
Purpose: To allow a writer to work on an approved project.
Criteria: Early career, published writer.
How: By application to Creative New Zealand's July funding round.
When to apply: Published writers at an early stage of their career applying to the July deadline for a writing grant under the Arts Board's New Work funding programme are considered automatically for this bursary.

Todd New Writers' Bursary
Funded Jointly by the Todd Trust and Creative New Zealand.
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 6 months
Value: $20,000
Purpose: For a promising new writer to work full-time on an approved project.
Criteria: New writers.

Writers' Fellowships (Residencies) Supported by Creative New Zealand
Co funded by Creative New Zealand and the host organisation. The stipend offered by each residency is between $20,000 and $50,000.
Auckland University Writers Fellowship

Value: $50,000
Purpose: To allow writers to work fulltime on a piece of writing.
Criteria: Available to a writer of creative literature.

Purpose: Designed to foster New Zealand writing by providing a full-time opportunity for a writer to work in an academic environment, the position is open to writers in the fields of creative writing: fiction, drama and poetry.
Criteria:The appointment is made on the basis of published or performed writing of high quality.

Waikato University Writer-in-Residence

International residencies
Creative New Zealand Berlin Writer's Residency
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 9 months
Value: Covers travel, accommodation and stipend
Criteria: The residency is open to any established writer of New Zealand literature who has been resident in New Zealand for at least three years. Priority is given to the writers of fiction, poetry, drama, biography, history (of national significance to New Zealand), writing on Arts topics.

International Writing Programme, University of Iowa, USA
Partnership between Creative New Zealand and the University of Iowa
Frequency: Annual (check website)
Duration: 3 months
Value: Total value $20,000 - provides for return travel to Iowa, a small per diem for food and living expenses and accommodation at the Iowa House, situated on the campus of the University of Iowa.
Purpose: To allow a New Zealand writer to participate in the IWP with other international writers.
Criteria: The residency is suitable for nationally recognised writers of fiction, poetry, drama, children's fiction, screenplays, biography or cultural commentary, who have previously published at least one volume of work.

Pacific Writers' Residency
Supported by Creative New Zealand and Fulbright New Zealand
Frequency: Annual
Duration: Late August to late November
Value: Return airfare to Hawaii ; rental accommodation costs for the three-month period; a stipend of NZ$6000 per month; and standard Fulbright insurance cover. Covers travel, accommodation and stipend.
Purpose: The Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writers' Residency at the University of Hawaii has been set up by the Arts Board of Creative New Zealand in partnership with Fulbright New Zealand to provide a unique opportunity for a New Zealand based writer of Pacific Islands heritage.
Criteria: The residency is open to writers of Pacific Islands heritage living in New Zealand who:
- has already had work published or accepted for publication
- is a New Zealand citizen
- has a specific project on which they propose to work during the residency.

Buddle Findlay Sargeson Writer's Fellowship
May be split across a number of recipients
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 10 months - March to December inclusive
Value: $20,000 plus use of furnished studio flat (The Sargeson Centre) near Albert Park, Auckland.
Criteria: Applicants must be published writers of poetry or fiction.
When: The fellowship is advertised in the Listener, the New Zealand Author and on the book pages of the major newspapers in October of each year.

Burns Fellowship (Otago University)
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 12 months
Value: Usually $46,000. Subject to funds being available from the income of the Fellowship Fund in any one year, the annual value of the Fellowship will not be less than the minimum salary of a fulltime University Lecturer. The total amount available to the Fellow includes salary and approved travel and removal expenses.
Purpose: The general purpose of the Fellowship is to encourage and promote imaginative New Zealand literature and to associate writers thereof with the University. It is attached to the Department of English of the University.
Criteria: The Fellowship shall be open to writers of imaginative literature, including poetry, drama, fiction, autobiography, biography, essays or literary criticism who are normally resident in New Zealand or who, for the time being, are residing overseas and who in the opinion of the Selection Committee have established by published work or otherwise that they are a serious writer likely to continue writing and to benefit from the Fellowship.

Meridian Energy Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship
This award is sponsored by Meridian Energy and managed by Trustees. It is administered on their behalf by Creative New Zealand.
Frequency: Annual
Duration: 4 months minimum
Value: $55,000
Purpose: to enable a writer to spend a minimum of four months in Menton, France.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens who have lived in NZ continuously for 10 years prior to making the application.
- Applicants should be published writers whose work has been well received.

National Library Fellowship
Frequency: Annual
Value: $45,000
Duration: tenable for one year
Purpose: The fellowship aims to encourage the scholarly use of the National Library's collections, which include the Children's Literature collections and the specialist collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the production of publications based on them.
The research undertaken is to lead to public presentation through publications, in scholarly or popular form, in any medium which will promote the objectives of the fellowship.

Randell Cottage Writer-in-residence (Wellington)

The 'brief' Writers Award (Great Barrier Island)
Value: Two months' free accommodation, plus $1,000.
Purpose: Prior publication in brief, or strong recommendation by a brief subscriber. The award is intended to advance an existing project, helping to bring it to fruition and, if possible, publication or exhibition.
