Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund

E ngā iwi o te motu huri noa, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā hoki koutou kātoa.
The fund for 2010 is now closed.
Purpose
The purpose of the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund (the Fund) is to support events which commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and promote nation building and community building. It is designed to encourage a wider spread of communities participating in Waitangi Day events.
Background
Waitangi Day is a day for all New Zealanders. It is a time for commemoration and reflection. It is also a time for encouragement, participation, and celebration of our nationhood. It is a moment to look at our country's history with an eye to what the future may hold. It is a space to contemplate the full meaning of the concept of partnership within one nation, two partners, and many cultures.
Criteria
Proposals are sought for specific events which meet the following criteria:
- the theme is the commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi;
- the event promotes nation building and community building;
- it encourages wide community participation and achievement;
- it promotes a cultural experience or event consistent with the above; and,
- the event takes place on or near Waitangi Day (6 February).
The government is especially keen to support events organised by local government and/or communities in partnership with tangata whenua that invite wide community participation.
Priority is given to events in local communities that commemorate Waitangi Day (6 February). Mid to long term Treaty of Waitangi resource and education projects, such as seminars, workshops and hui, do not come under this Fund. Funding is not available for travel to Waitangi, Bay of Islands.
Applicant organisations
Applications will be accepted from local government and community organisations which:
- have an existing role in community activities and/or services;
- have the capacity to administer and support the proposed project;
- make a commitment to provide an evaluation of the proposed project after the event; and,
- are a recognised entity.
Funding
Grants made in the past have ranged from $200 to $10,000, with the average last year being $3,000. Proposals are accepted until 5pm on Friday 11 September 2009 from community organisations to support activities which are consistent with the above purpose.
