NORTHLAND

Waitangi Day Commemorations Committee, $70,000

A programme of events includes Dawn Karakia, Flag raising, Waka Karakia, Sports events, Karakia, 21 gun salute, Waka ki Uta, Sunset ceremony. To encourage community participation and promote cultural experience.

Waitangi National Trust, $20,000

A festival from Friday 3 rd February 2006 through to and including Sunday 5 th at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. To encourage learning about estates and events that happened here. Encourage community wide learning and participation through music, arts, crafts and sports.

Horeke Development Trust, $3,000

A commemoration of the journey of Governor William Hobson and Māori Chiefs, porters and Missionaries from Waimate North Mission Station to the Wesleyan Mission Station at Mangungu by horse trek.

Pouto Waikaretu Marae, $3,000

An invitation to whanau from Pouto Waikaretu Marae and communities along the four main rivers of the Kaipara to celebrate Waitangi weekend together in fun activities including sport and recreation competitions – arts and crafts – culture and heritage – local history displays and presentations. Aims to promote community participation.

Te Runanga o Te Rarawa Charitable Trust, $2,000

A commemoration of the signing in Kaitaia on the 28 April 1840 by 61 Tupuna and the Crown. This coming year they plan to erect a stone ‘obelisk’ memorial with brass plaque. It is specific to Waitangi Day on the signing of the Treaty.

Te Hana Community Development Charitable Trust, $1,500

A community day celebration at Te Hana on Sunday 5 th February. This will include a combined dawn service followed by a mid-morning combined church service for community and local tangata whenua, followed by lunch.

Nga Marae Rima O Whangaruru, $3,000

A five Marae waka ama challenge, to commemorate the signing by the tupuna of the Whangaruru area of the Treaty of Waitangi. The event is aimed at families, youth, elders, people with disabilities and other ethnic groups.

AUCKLAND

Toi o Manukau – Māori Arts and Culture Trust, $10,000

The celebration of the Treaty of Waitangi in Manukau where thousands converge to share their songs, dances, food, crafts and language. Both Mana and Tangata Whenua host an onsite Treaty workshop and traditional Māori arts workshop. Aims to encourage the wider community.

New Zealand Nepal Society Inc, $2,000

A seminar to commemorate the Treaty of Waitangi. To be held at one of the Marae in Auckland.

Awaroa ki Manuka Inc Society, $5,000

An event aT the Tahuna Marae, Waiuku, with celebrations on Waitangi Day 6 th February. A cultural heritage context course commenced October 2005 and concludes in May 2006. An important aspect of the course is a valued session on the Treaty of Waitangi.

New Zealand Tamil Senior Citizens Association Inc, $1,000

Talks by knowledgeable people regarding the Treaty. Plus cultural show and music to create awareness in the community regarding the Treaty of Waitangi and its significance. Encourages wide community participation.

Helensville Te Awaroa Women’s Centre, $2,000

An event which uses the locality/geography of the Kaipara region that identifies historic Māori and Pākehā sites. The significance of the place names creates a sense of belonging connection between the cultures, affirming reasons we chose to live here.

Waitangai Rua Rau Tau, $4,000

The 4 th annual Waitangi Rua Rau Tau lecture series which focuses all New Zealanders towards harmonious relationships in the preparation for the bicentenary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and establishment of New Zealand as a British Colony.

Tamaki Ngāti Kapo Inc, $3,500

The promotion of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in a positive but fun format, by initiating a cultural music and dance festival, encouraging greater community awareness and involvement. Aimed at kapo (blind) Māori through encouraged participation and interaction from all interested parties.

WAIKATO

Waikato Ethnic Council Inc, $3,000

Cultural events including food and clothing stalls. The members of the Ethnic organisations wish to commemorate Waitangi Day 2006 in Hamilton. Aimed at all different ethnic groups.

Waka Tangata Trust, $3,000

A celebration bringing together the wider community in Kawhia to celebrate Waitangi Day and share a waka cultural, sporting fun picnic day.

Kawhia Tourism Trust, $4,000

A traditional Māori food festival in Kawhia. Showcasing traditional food from the sea and land. Aimed at the local community and to be held on February 4 th.

Refugee Orientation Centre Trust, $1,000

A cultural dance performance from different tribes/ countries, and Arab and African food with oriental spices.

Congolese Community of Waikato Incorporated, $1,000

A performance of Congolese music and to cook Congolese African food. Aims to encourage the whole community to participate in the commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Raukawa Trust Board, $2,000

A photographic exhibition of a ‘visual timeline’ to capture the process of nation building. A collaboration between South Waikato District Council and the mandatory Iwi authority Raukawa Trust Board, for the wider community.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Harataunga, $3000

A day of cultural and theatrical performance (Māori and non-Māori) around the theme of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Will also include static displays, information sharing with a view to promoting better understanding of same. Open to the entire Coromandel community and districts.

Nga Ringa Whakahaere o te Iwi Māori Inc Soc, $2,000

A replenishing of indigenous plants through a planting day at the local Marae. This will be combined with the local community health organisation, with a presentation of the ‘healthy properties’ of native plants.

BAY OF PLENTY

Tauranga District Council/ Tauranga Moana Waitangi Day, $2,000

A dawn ceremony on mauao (Mt Maunganui) with karakia, church service, open forum, waka, breakfast for kaumatua/kuia and dignitaries.

Te Rangatahi o te Whenua Trust, $3,000

Nga Pirita, a celebration bringing together people of the Treaty, Māori and Pākehā, to celebrate their history and give insight into Matauranga and Tikanga Māori.

Te Waiariki Purea Trust, $1,000

A waka display and ‘have a go’ experience at Lake Rotorua Lakefront, inviting the whole community.

Rotorua District Council, $3,000

Exhibitions, workshops, awards and family day. An exhibition on ‘moving through the Treaty’ is supported by workshops on symbols of the Treaty and nationhood for children through to adults.

Murupara Elim Church Trust, $1,000

A three day hui to educate the Christian community about the significant impact of the Treaty on Māori society as a whole. Topics covered include; History of the Treaty of Waitangi, influence of Missionaries on Māori, personal life stories (1950-1960s).

Ngaiterangi Iwi Incorporated Society, $4,000

A community Waitangi Day Festival at Mount Maunganui and Waitangi Day Art Exhibition, including ‘what does Waitangi mean to me’.

HAWKE'S BAY/GISBORNE

KaPai Kaiti Trust, $5,000

An event aimed at the whanau/families of Kaiti and the Gisborne community. Events include competitions on Treaty of Waitangi from the main stage with prizes. Also singing groups, displays, presentations and stalls.

Kahungunu Māori Millenium Committee, $6,000

An event that celebrates family, community and nationhood, 400m from where Kahungunu signed the Treaty. Includes waka pageant, multi-cultural and interactive arts, craft and food stalls, children’s activities.

Te Poho o Rawiri Marae, $6,000

A re-enactment of the first contact between Captain Cook and tangata whenua and a re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty at local schools. Commemoration of the Treaty of Waitangi at Te Poho o Rawiri Marae.

St Francis Co-operating Parish of Clive-Haumoana, $300

A twilight service at St Francis Church in Clive, on Sunday 5 th February.

Tawhiti Blocks Trust, $4,000

A 3-day Wananga, with 3 guest facilitators (Amster Reedy and ‘Kaitakawaenga’, tawhiti/development. Aim to update the community about the Treaty of Waitangi, to promote community building. The event is Marae based and encourages community wide participation.

E Tu Elgin, $2,000

A free three hour community celebration including a range of physical and recreational activities – leaflet, face painting, Waitangi quiz, arts/crafts, live entertainment, kapa haka etc. Aim to celebrate the community through a fun inter-active event.

TARANAKI

New Plymouth District Council, $8,000

A dawn ceremony at Ngamoto Beach, followed by entertainment and the launching of waka ama. A community breakfast will be provided. Plus a MC, full stage programme, workshops (poi making, flax weaving, carving and painting), hangi, multi-ethnic food stalls, art market, education, children’s flag painting, bouncy castle.

Pae pae in the Park, $3,000

A day of community togetherness, celebrating the significance of Waitangi Day, coming together as one people. Sharing the day with speeches, music, dance and sporting displays around the Waka Aotea and Hangi.

MANAWATU/WANGANUI

Palmerston North City Council, $8,000

An annual celebration of partnerships to bring communities together to share in a day long event of music, arts, traditions and unique experiences.

Ratana Sports Club Inc, $6,000

Ratana community day on Waitangi Day involving tamariki-mokopuna to kaumatua, where residential streets are encouraged to form teams to participate in fun events on the Marae, friendly competition, such as Top Town events, singing competitions, and trivial pursuits involving whanau participation and enhancing community cohesion. Also involves a community shared kai.

Tararua Television Trust, $3,000

Tararua Television, in conjunction with tangata whenua and the local district council, invitation of community participation in a programme of cultural events from various ethnic groups culminating in a Waitangi Day Idol final, followed by a hangi.

WELLINGTON

Porirua Community Arts Council Inc, $8,000

A major festival that is organised each year to celebrate Waitangi Day involving all cultures in the area, and particularly showcasing the arts and cultures of this multi-cultural area.

Wellington Tenths Trust, $6,000

A free open air community festival with activities, displays and entertainment programme. To commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and to promote both a cultural experience and nation and community building.

Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui, $9,000

A community day held to celebrate Waitangi Day at Te Whiti Park, Lower Hutt. The day will feature displays, kapa haka, education and health exhibitions. All ethnic communities in the Hutt Valley will take part.

Orongomai Marae Community Centre Incorporated, $5,000

An open day at Orongomai Marae, with education on Treaty of Waitangi, an invited Key-note speaker, community celebration of the Treaty, ethnic groups performing, stalls and traditional foods (11th year of Waitangi Open day).

Kapiti Coast District Council, $2,500

Encourage youth involvement via an essay and art competition, a beach walk to the site of one of the Treaty signings in Kapiti and a multi-cultural lunchtime ‘food’ event at the site.

The Wellington Boys and Girls Institute, $2,000

A one day event held on Waitangi Day that celebrates whanau and commemorates the significance of the signing on the 6 th of February as a community.

Ngakau Kotahi Branch of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, $3,000

Two, one day events, involving four workshops that will focus on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the events will seek positive pathways, developing relationships.

NELSON/MARLBOROUGH

Fresh FM, The Tasman Broadcasting Trust, $1,000

A six hour special radio programme on 6 th February of features, interviews etc commemorating Waitangi Day. Three week on air promotional campaign for this event and other Waitangi Day 2006 regional/local activities.

WEST COAST

Kawatiri Māori Women’s Welfare League, $2,500

A family games day to celebrate Waitangi Day in the community. Including a blessing, talks about the Treaty, games, entertainment and refreshments (hangi).

Grey District Waitangi Day Community Picnic Committee, $3,000

A community celebration on Waitangi Day 2006 for all the communities of the Grey District at no cost to them.

Friends of Fox River and Bridge Society Inc, $2,000

A beach sculpture competition to celebrate Waitangi Day. To promote the growth of our Fox River Heritage project and encourage achievement in art and craft activities.

CANTERBURY

Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum, $6,000

Formal celebrations between Crown and Iwi involving waka. To commemorate the signing of the Treaty and promote cultural experiences and takes place on Waitangi Day.

Belfast Community Network Inc, $3,000

A combined church service followed by an open day at Willowbank Wildlife Park. The picnic area will host community information kiosks featuring Treaty information, local history and environment stalls as well as entertainment for children.

SOUTHLAND

Hauora Social Services Charitable Trust/ Piki Ora House, $2,500

A week of events including a touch tournament involving iwi of the area, a community breakfast/lunch as well as two Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshops. Targeted towards organisations and the community at large.

Te Oruanui Incorporated Society, $1,000

An open day on the marae on Waitangi Day for the wider Western Southland community plus rest home residents ‘associated’ with Te Oruanui. Cultural marae hangi and associated events on Waitangi Day.

OTHER ISLANDS

Chatham Community Focus Trust, $3,000

A family day with games, BBQ lunch and karakia. They ask several organisations to organise fun events, e.g. hole in one, kayaking, treasure hunt etc. A family day, promotes communities getting together bringing as much as the total island population together.
