Every country has particular things that are recognised as national symbols. The Ministry is responsible for maintaining – and, in some cases, developing - certain symbols of New Zealand identity. These include the flag, the national anthems, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, and commemorative anniversaries such as Waitangi Day and Anzac Day. Symbols of this nature are inevitably charged with the strong feelings of those whose country they represent; they are sometimes the subject of challenge or debate. Even so, they remain clear points of reference for our sense of nationhood, and can contribute to greater national and social unity.
