Televison New Zealand (TVNZ) is New Zealand’s public service broadcaster and biggest free to air broadcaster.  The Ministry funds TVNZ to  provide to maintain television transmission coverage in less commercially viable parts of New Zealand and undertake transmission to the Pacific Islands to support New Zealand interests in regard to the Pacific.

The Crown Ownership Monitoring Unit (COMU) of the Treasury has a complementary role in respect of the operations of TVNZ with COMU responsible for advising Ministers on board composition and performance.
