A three-day festival of sport, art, craft, heritage, education, food and New Zealand culture. To include the New Zealand Navy, a Ki o Rahi tournament, displays, demonstrations and cultural performances. The theme for 2012 is 'Nature is best'. To be held from the 4th-6th of February.

New Zealand Tamil Senior Citizens Association Inc to combine with The New Zealand Tamil Forum (Inc)

To celebrate the Treaty by speaking (reading) it out loud as Māori was transmitted when Māori first signed the Treaty. Tauranga City Council/ Tauranga Moana Waitangi Day Committee

A community dawn service at the base of Hopukiore - Mount Drury to begin at 6.30am. Following the dawn service kaumatua, kuia and dignitaries will be invited for breakfast at Whareroa Marae. At 9am a community celebration of Te Tiriti o Waitangi will begin with speeches from civic leaders, an open forum for community and key note speakers. This will conclude with kapa haka performances at 11am.

The Waitangi Day event is designed to entertain, educate and commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in a fun, family-friendly environment. It will include cultural displays and entertainment on an outdoor stage, a 'kidzone' with a range of free activities for young people, Māori cultural workshops and a Waitangi education area.

The Paepae in the Park is a celebration that is held every year to celebrate the Treaty of Waitangi. The event involves young and old with song & dance. We engage a top national band and encourage all our local artists to perform on the day.

MANAWATU / WANGANUI

Nga Tai o te Awa

A family festive fun day for the community which will involve fun activities, food and craft stalls, exhibitions including taa moko artists. A waka racing event will also be held which will include teams from NZ and abroad. The day will end with an evening of entertainment on the river with local artists.

Hi Matangi Moana Waka Society Incorporated

Waitangi Day Waka Tangata Time Trials. Four teams of 20 compete with the support of their whanau in a day of racing in a waka tangata on the water at the Hokowhiti Centennial Lagoon in Palmerston North. Followed by a hakari and whakaari that are threaded with the theme of the Treaty.

Otaihape Māori Komiti Incorporated (OTMK)

A community family day with a focus on Te Ao Māori. Participants will be able to take part in a three hour concert/show that will include waiata, skits, debate and other entertainment. We will also have information stalls, free food, competitions, children's play area and kaumatua tent. Local artists will be showcased and audience participation encouraged. The projects is a smoke-free, alcohol and drug free event.

WELLINGTON

Porirua Community Arts Council Inc

The Festival of the Elements uses the arts (in all forms) to celebrate the cultural diversity in our community which has been made possible by the founding document of the Treaty of Waitangi.

A regatta to celebrate waka and waka ama on the Wellington waterfront. To include a stage with performances, food stalls and other water based activities on the lagoon. To be based around the wharewaka in conjunction with the Wellington City Council who plan to contribute $60000.

Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui

'Te Ra o Te Raukura', an event for the community to celebrate the Treaty and its meaning as the Founding Document and to enjoy cultural displays, health exhibitions, local music groups, school kapa haka groups and sports.

Kapiti Coast District Council

$1,500.00

Commences with a traditional powhiri to welcome the community to the commemorative activities and formal speeches to mark the significance of Waitangi Day for Aotearoa and for the Kapiti Community. Following the formal events, the community will have a chance to participate in the many planned gala festivities including entertainment, hangi, competitions and craft stalls.

Masterton District Council

$2,500.00

A whanau picnic targeting primary/pre-school age children and their families to be held on Waitangi Day in the Park. Free activities & entertainment targeting our tamariki. Food will be available but a price limit of $5 limit will be set. Second event is a community debate to be held the Thursday before / after Waitangi Day. Debate topic will be Treaty related & debated by local celebrities. Tickets will be sold at a small fee to the debate only.

NELSON/MARLBOROUGH

Te Awhina Marae o Motueka Society Inc

Family orientated day of music; food; children’s activities; traditional Maori arts/crafts and games; information re the Treaty, Mana Whenua Iwi, other entities, local stories and history. To be held Sunday February 5th as Whakatu Marae is Nelson is hosting the Waitangi Day Festival for the Nelson Area in 2012 then the marae will alternate the hosting in future years.

An interactive public performance on the Picton Foreshore. Te Rerenga o Te Ra will perform local waiata, poi, rakau and haka for the local and tourist population. They will be able to participate and learn in this experience.

WEST COAST

To hold a community celebration on Waitangi Day 2012 for all people from all cultures at no cost. To encourage visitors to our town to participate in the event. A day that starts with a welcome, followed by entertainment, BBQ n hangi lunch, bands, ice creams, local Māori arts n crafts and books and information on display.

Arahura Marae Waitangi Day celebrations begin with powhiri, karakia, and speeches by iwi and community leaders followed by kai. Whanau activities will include kapa haka traditional skills workshops, including raranga, whakairo and waiata. Te Waipounamu Māori Heritage Centre - pounamu interpretation panels and information on display one month before Waitangi Day celebrations. Cultural interpretaion tours including reciting pakiwaitara and presentations about pounamu and traditional Māori life will be presented to the public.

Waitangi Day includes a traditional welcome at the marae to officials and guests with the Governor General's speech delivered by him or his representative. Symbolic waka landings in the region. Citizenship ceremony performed by the Mayor Christchurch City Council. Hangi to be served.

An evening event to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi that will include a mihi whakatau, a guest speaker, four presentations from Araiteuru Marae affiliate groups and a supper after the closing karakia. To be held the evening of Friday 3rd February as people will be travelling away to spend time with whanau.

SOUTHLAND

Queenstown Lakes District Council

Free to the public event in the Queenstown Gardens on Waitangi Day to promote cultural awareness and partnership to the wider community. Māori performances, bands, Nga Kete Matauranga, display of Māori art, face painting, waka ama, weavers, mirimiri free for adults as well as having Southern Institute Māori language tutors available to promote Māori language courses.

OUTER ISLANDS

Chatham Community Focus Trust

$2000.00

We will begin with a karakia by a local kuia or kaumatua then a commemorative service will follow led by Alfred Preece the local Mayor. We are currently working with our local kapa haka/music club to provide the community with a musical performance followed by a light meal. There will also be whanau orientated activities organised to include a quiz, flax weaving and a colouring competition.
