Successful Applicants to the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund 2005

NORTHLAND

Network Waitangi Whangarei, $ 750

A public forum called 'Te Tiriti o Waitangi - Past, Present and Future Implications'. A panel of 4 speakers will be invited to take up a different aspect of this discussion and then give an opportunity for audience debate.

Waitangi Day Commemorations Committee, $ 60,000

Official celebrations at Waitangi to be held at various locations in the area.

Te Runanga o Te Rarawa Charitable Trust, $ 1,500

A re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty in Kaitaia - on 28 April 1840, using costumes and props. Whole community is invited. The day includes waiata, karanga, mihimihi and colonial experiences .

Waitangi National Trust, $ 20,000

A festival from 2 Feb to 5 Feb at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, encouraging learning about the estate and events about cultures of NZ through music, arts, crafts and sports.

AUCKLAND

Toi o Manukau, $ 10,000

Annual Waitangi Day celebrations, in partnership with the Manukau City Council. A multicultural programme of music, food and art; Treaty education prior to Waitangi Day for new migrants; onsite Treaty workshop discussion on the day and traditional and contemporary Maori arts workshops throughout the park.

New Zealand Nepal Society Inc, $ 1,000

A workshop on an Auckland marae and a Maori culture programme.

Awaroa ki Manuka Inc. Society, $ 5,000

A two day event featuring kapa haka and waka events, a concert, awards for Maori youth and stalls.

New Zealand Tamil Senior Citizens Association Inc, $ 1,000

A debate on the Treaty, celebration with cultural dances and music, and talks by educationalists.

New Zealand Tamil Society, $ 1,500

A multicultural festival of music, dance and food by different ethnic groups including Tangata Whenua.

New Zealand Sri Lanka Buddhist Trust, $ 1,000

Visits to marae - sharing activities and signing memorandum of understanding. Waitangi Day educational programme, conference, publications. Environmental activities - native tree planting and caring.

Waitakere City Council, $ 5,000

A city wide Marae Open Day that will have a focus of key activities targeted at Te Tiriti o Waitangi education, celebration and awareness.

Papakura Marae Society Inc., $ 2,000

Guest speakers, culture groups and other community groups, entertainment, food on the marae.

Tamaki Ngati Kapo Inc., $ 3,000

A cultural and sports festival for kapo (blind) Maori and their whanau, promoting the principles of the Treaty through waiata, storytelling and sports. Also arts and crafts stalls by local iwi, information stalls and mini-workshops.

Methodist Mission Northland - Te Manawa O Hine, $ 1,000

A three day cultural, educational and life-enhancing visit to Te Tiriti O Waitangi Marae, with an emphasis on helping the women who attend to re-establish iwi and cultural links after years of abuse and disadvantage.

Treaty Resource Centre, a project of the Auckland Workers Educational Association, $ 5,000

An annual public commemoration of the initial signing of the Treaty on 6 February, with music and children's entertainment, stalls and craft demonstrations. Also information sharing regarding the Treaty.

WAIKATO

Puihi Charitable Trust, $ 1,000

Community wananga 5-7 February with hangi kai, waiata, weaving and horseback riding.

Waka Tangata Trust, $ 8,000

A waka regatta, waka parade, waka experience - a fun day for all nationalities to participate .

Tui Trust, $ 2,000

An information sharing day on the significance of the Treaty. The forum will educate participants in a positive, non-threatening way on the circumstances leading up to and the signing of the Treaty.

BAY OF PLENTY

Whakaatu Whanaunga Trust, $ 2,000

A community waka ama regatta. All members of the community will be invited and prizes will include certificates with copies of the Treaty attached.

Tauranga District Council/ Tauranga Moana Waitangi Day Committee, $ 2,000

A dawn ceremony on mauao with karakia, church service, open forum, waka, breakfast for kaumatua/kuia and dignitaries.

Te Papa Takaro o Te Arawa, $ 5,000

A one day event for the community aimed at commemorating Waitangi Day using multi sensory mediums such as music, kapa haka, hip hop, dance, top town events, fun activities and sport. A community focussed day appealing to all age groups.

Te Rangatahi o te Whenua Trust, $ 2,000

A celebration of 'Te Ahi Ka' with a mix of cultures and ages coming together. A central theme will be a series of 'home fires', lit on the beach at midnight of the 6th, by runners. There will be food and speakers throughout the day.

Ngai Tamahaua Hapu - Opape Marae Committee, $ 1,500

A series of Treaty education workshops. It is intended that the event will take place in two stages - February 6 2005 and May 27/28 2004 (being the date when the rangatira of Whakatohea signed the Treaty at Opotiki in 1840).

Te Waiariki Purea Trust, $ 1,500

Tangata Hoe Waka Hikoi - to gather together up to 10 waka and paddle to marae and public locations including Rotorua Lakes. Public will be invited to participate.

Rotorua District Council, $ 3,000

An exhibit and seminar exploring the themes of partnership and nationhood. Opening on Waitangi Day, for 3 weeks.

HAWKE'S BAY/GISBORNE

KaPai Kaiti Trust, $ 7,000

Waitangi Day at Waikirikiri Park, Kaiti, Gisborne with a Treaty quiz competition, kapa haka, singing, music groups, break-dancing, stalls. There will be a display on historical and current Treaty issues and presentations on community development projects.

Kahungunu Maori Millennium Committee, $10,000

A waka pageant, interactive arts, children's activities, recreation tournament, craft and food stalls and convert of diversity. In association with the Hastings District Council.

Te Poho o Rawiri Marae, $ 4,000

A re-enactment of the first contact between Captain Cook and tangata whenua and a re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty. The event will include some input from the Gisborne District Council.

Ngati Porou Hauora Inc, $ 2,500

A surfing competition, touch tournament, waka ama regatta, squash and tennis tournament and wananga with guest speaker. Included will be re-enactments of the Treaty signing.

Waimarama School, $ 3,000

A family fun day at Waimarama Beach with storytellers, puppet shows, dancing and quizzes all with Waitangi Day themes. A repeat of last year's successful community event.

TARANAKI

New Plymouth District Council, $ 7,000

An arts competition leading up to Waitangi Day, a Waitangi forum/debate and a dawn ceremony and festival day featuring music, crafts, food and sports events on Waitangi Day. The theme of the celebrations is 'The Treaty of Waitangi - how can the people of New Zealand/Aotearoa continue to move forward together?'. The main event will be held in collaboration with Ngati Te Whiti Hapu and the Taranaki Multi Ethnic Council.

Ngati Tupaia Inc, $ 2,500

A celebration acting out the signing of the Treaty. Also a discussion corner on the Treaty and a flag painting/raising activity.

South Taranaki District Council, $ 2,500

A 'Paepae in the Park' where local interest groups will be invited to speak, marae style, celebrating the diversity and achievements of South Taranaki . Entertainment will take place in between speakers and there would be a hangi lunch. A repeat of 2004's successful event.

MANAWATU/WANGANUI

Palmerston North City Council, $ 10,000

A festival providing a wide variety of cultures, art, hospitality and entertainment - traditional and contemporary music and dance, arts, craft and food.

Hinengakau Development Trust, $ 2,500

Live entertainment, youth sports day, community displays - art, exhibitions, white elephant stalls and waka races.

Eketahuna Community Board, $ 500

A family fun day picnic for the whole community. A focus on fostering neighbourliness and bonding as a community.

Taumata Hauora Trust, $ 8,000

A commemoration of the Treaty through a dawn ceremony, Waitangi workshops, Waitangi Idol competition and a kai festival.

WELLINGTON

Porirua Community Arts Council Inc, $ 8,000

To fund a major Festival of the Elements building on the experience of more than 10 years organising the event. The festival uses art forms to celebrate the cultural diversity of the city and New Zealand .

Orongomai Marae Community Centre Inc, $ 8,000

An open day at the marae, open to the whole region. This year's kaupapa is the build up to the signing of the Treaty. 2005 will be the marae's tenth open day and the annual event has become a focal point for the community on Waitangi Day attracting visitors and dignatries.

Maraeroa Marae Association Inc, $ 2,000

Dawn ceremony powhiri, ecumenical service, key note speakers, presentations from invited community groups, open discussion, performers. End with breakfast.

Wellington Tenths Trust, $ 8,000

Cultural performances, taiaha, hiphop competition, waka ama display, art, children's activities and food.

Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui, $ 8,000

A community day held on Te Whiti Park, Lower Hutt on the closest Sunday to Waitangi Day. It features displays, kapa haka, education and health exhibitions. All ethnic sections of the community take part.

Kapiti Coast District Council, $ 3,000

A community celebration including formal powhiri, shared kai and speakers from Maori and Pakeha perspectives.

Kaumatua Council Te Ati Awa Iwi Ki Whakarongotai Marae Waikanae, $ 2,000

An annual open day at the Whakarongotai Marae where there will be an open forum for speakers and education about the Treaty as well as entertainment.

NELSON/MARLBOROUGH

Omaka Maori Womens Welfare League, $ 2,500

A Treaty workshop for Maori and non-Maori, with activities, displays, entertainment and kai.

Fresh FM, The Tasman Broadcasting Trust, $ 2,000

A community event of music, activities, dance, children's games, food and community information. Music will include one known act plus local performers. Live broadcast from the stage and recorded items on Fresh FM all day.

Onetahua Marae, $ 1,000

An open day at Onetahua Marae with speakers from Mataa Waka and three local iwi, artwork, weaving and other activities.

Millennium Gallery Trust Board Marlborough, $ 3,000

A community celebration of the signing of the Treaty to take place on 17 June 2005 - the date the Treaty was signed in this area - focussing on the launch of a special regional exhibition, Kei Puta te Wairau, involving all Maori iwi, arts and heritage operations and the wider Marlborough public.

WEST COAST

Reefton Who Cares Inc, $ 500

A community celebration at Who Cares House - hangi, potluck shared lunch, native tree planting and games afternoon.

Grey District Waitangi Day Community Picnic Committee, $ 4,000

An annual event run with local iwi which involves music, cultural experiences, free activities and food. The day opens with a commemoration of the spirit of Waitangi Day and is a celebration of togetherness and diversity.

CANTERBURY

Okains Bay Maori & Colonial Museum, $ 6,000

Formal celebrations between Crown and Iwi involving waka and cultural groups and wider community.

Belfast Community Network Inc., $ 4,000

A combined church service followed by an open day at Willowbank wildlife park. The picnic area will host community information kiosks featuring Treaty information, local history and environment stalls as well as entertainment for children.

OTAGO

Te Runanga o Otakou (Inc), $ 8,000

Official Ngai Tahu Waitangi Day celebration, with the theme for 2005 being "Charter of New Zealand". Day will start and end traditionally with panel debate, and skits and activities throughout the day.

SOUTHLAND

Oraka-Aparima Runaka Inc., $ 1,500

An event on the marae for the local community to enter into dialogue on the Treaty in the context of the Ngai Tahu claim and deed of settlement. Aimed at both Maori and Pakeha, in particular groups involved in the educational, environmental and health sectors.

Hauora Social Services Charitable Trust/ Piki Ora House, $ 1,000

A series of hui related to the Treaty throughout the week with guest speakers and a chance to share kai. .

Te Puka a Maui Charitable Trust, $ 2,500

A Waitangi Idol competition. A celebration of Waitangi Day via the staging of a competition based around singing and performance in Te Reo Maori and English to raise positive consciousness about Waitangi Day and highlight local talent.

CHATHAM ISLANDS

Chatham Community Focus Trust, $ 2,000

A fun day for the family with a bbq lunch. Community organisations are encouraged to organise an event such as games, sports and activities. Last year this event was organised by the Council but this year it gives its support to the Community Focus Trust to arrange the event.
