The Ministry is accountable to the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Hon Maggie Barry and Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman in relation to Crown-funded sports agencies.

Hon Maggie Barry ONZM

Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage

Maggie Barry is the National Party’s Member of Parliament for North Shore.

During her 30-year media career, before being elected to Parliament, she has been an award-winning news and current affairs television and radio broadcaster, a magazine feature writer for the NZ Listener and she was co-producer and presenter of Maggie’s Garden Show. In 1996 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to broadcasting.

She has also worked previously with the government as the consumer representative on the National Health Committee, chaired a working party into palliative care and headed a review into NZ Maternity services for the Minister of Health.

Her governance experience includes two terms as a Director of Outward Bound and three years as Chair of the NZ Book Council.

In December 2016, the Broadcasting portfolio was disestablished and its responsibilities are now included within the Communications and the Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolios.

Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman

Minister for Sport and Recreation

Dr Jonathan Coleman is the Minister for Health and the Minister for Sport and Recreation.

Prior to entering Parliament, Dr Jonathan Coleman studied medicine at Auckland University. Following house surgeon years in New Zealand, he spent eight years overseas working and furthering his studies. Dr Coleman holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the London Business School. After returning to New Zealand in 2001 he worked in clinical medicine and management consultancy.
