Christchurch Earthquake

The Ministry extends our deepest sympathy to the people of Christchurch following February 22nd's devastating earthquake.

The Ministry's Going Digital's call centre for enquiries about the switchover to digital television is out of action and extensively damaged. Calls are being rerouted to Wellington.

Important phone numbers to note are 0800 RED CROSS (0800 733 276) for missing people and the number for people overseas calling about missing people is +64 7 850 2199.

People affected by the quake can call the Government's earthquake helpline for advice. The helpline will run 24 hours a day. The number is 0800 779 997.

Plunket New Zealand says families concerned about their child's health or wellbeing should call 0800 933 922.

The New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) has made available for free download a book to help schools support students. Described as an psychological first aid guide, it contains research-based information to help teachers understand children’s likely immediate and longer-term responses to disaster. It includes ideas of questions to prompt classroom discussion, and activities to help students work through their experiences.  You will find this resource on NZCER's website.
