Creative New Zealand’s Toi Ake fund supports iwi, hapū and mātā waka to grow and retain Māori arts on marae. Projects usually focus on heritage arts including ngā mahi a Te Whare Pora, and the art of oratory including whaikōrero, karanga and whakapapa recitation. Contemporary arts projects are also supported. Applications can be made for up to $65,000.

Toi Ake has been offered since 2005. Applicants must submit a current arts strategy which outlines what is needed to develop their local arts. Funding for such planning is available through Creative New Zealand’s Quick Response grants. Mātā waka, or kinship groups living outside their traditional rohe/district, are eligible to apply for funding. Toi Ake supports artworks for new wharenui but does not include restoration projects.
Tohunga/Tukunga - Mentoring programme
Tohunga/Tukunga supports Tohunga to pass on specialist artistry skills. Applicants must be senior Māori artists who have a high level of excellence, possess in-depth knowledge of their artform, and whose abilities would be enhanced by a one-to-one partnership with a Tohunga who is willing to mentor them. This programme is not intended to support standard teacher/student relationships. It supports exceptional Tohunga/Tukunga partnerships and is targeted at a PhD level or equivalent. Tohunga who have mentored Tukunga in the past include Dame Katerina Te Heikōkō Mataira (DNZM), Dr Ngapo ‘Bub’ Wehi and Dr Richard Nunns. Applications can be made for up to $5,000.
