Kia Kaha Christchurch : one year on

Published 13 February, 2012 by Editor

To mark the first anniversary of the 22 February 2011 earthquake, Te Papa has organised the following events.

Monday 20 February to Sunday 18 March 2012

On Tuesday 22 February 2011, a devastating earthquake struck the Canterbury region – the second of two major quakes. 185 people lost their lives in the quake, and Christchurch suffered severe damage.

One year on, Te Papa pauses to remember those lost – and to celebrate the love, resilience, and innovation shown by so many at this time. For one month, we are commemorating the quake through:

  • our Heartfelt display and commemoration book
  • your own images of the time, displayed in OurSpace
  • hands-on Explore trolleys
  • a risk-management workshop
  • the NZMuseums blog – sharing earthquake experiences
  • the NZMuseums eHive – celebrating Canterbury’s collections.

Heartfelt – Level 2

‘Lyttelton heart’ brooches are at the centre of this display. People around New Zealand and the world poured their hearts out in the weeks following the quake, giving of their time, resources, and money. The heart quickly became the most abiding symbol of care and support.

Please feel free to sign our commemoration book, also on display.

OurSpace – Level 2

We invite you to contribute photos and films that reflect the love, resilience, and innovation of New Zealanders in the wake of the disaster. We will profile your contributions around The Map in OurSpace.

Explore trolley – Level 2

Visit the earthquake Explore trolley to learn about liquefaction and other geological aspects of earthquakes. All day, every day.

Risk-management workshop – Protect your treasures at home

Thursday 23 February, 6.30pm–7.30pm, Level 4 Workshop

Vicki Humphrey, Head of Conservation at the National Museum of Australia, talks about how to protect your treasures in a natural disaster. Sponsored by the Earthquake Commission.

Free entry. Registration essential.
