Her Majesty The Queen, NZ PM Helen Clark and more than 2,000 dignitaries, veterans, Kiwi defence staff and members of the public attended the official dedication of the New Zealand Memorial yesterday at Hyde Park Corner, London.

Greeted by a Royal Guard of Honour lined up amongst the sixteen towering bronze standards of the memorial, The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, other members of the royal family, and Rt Hon Tony Blair and Mrs Cherie Blair.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony, Helen Clark said, 'The New Zealand Memorial commemorates the enduring bonds between New Zealand and the United Kingdom and the shared sacrifice during times of war. It is a symbol of our common heritage and of New Zealand’s distinct national identity. The memorial celebrates the strength and longstanding relationship between New Zealand and the United Kingdom and asserts too our confidence in its future.'

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair also addressed the audience which included more than 300 members from the New Zealand Defence Force – the largest contingent of New Zealand armed forces to parade in the United Kingdom since World War II.

The ceremony began with a 120 strong military march from Constitution Hill to Hyde Park Corner. The Royal Guard and band were accompanied by more than 60 New Zealand and UK veterans who fought in WWII, Japan, Korea and the Malayan emergency. They were flanked by the New Zealand Defence Maori culture group.

Three Typhoons from RAF Base Conningby joined the Royal New Zealand Boeing 757 aircraft which had brought the defence contingent from New Zealand in a spectacular ‘fly past’ at 1000ft above Hyde Park.

The Royal party greeted the 34 New Zealand veterans at the end of the ceremony, along with memorial designers Paul Dibble and John Hardwick Smith.

The strong cultural significance of the ceremony was retained throughout by New Zealand singers Dave Dobbyn and Hayley Westenra and with moving karanga and haka performances from Ngati Ranana - the London based Maori community – and the New Zealand Defence Force Maori culture group.

All Blacks visit to the memorial

The All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby team, are pictured here during a special visit on 2 November to the soon-to-be dedicated, New Zealand Memorial at Hyde Park Corner.

Team members took time out of their rigorous training schedule, before their international clash with England on Sunday to show their support for the memorial.
