The DNZB Biographical Database

Database policy

The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography database has been created primarily for selection purposes. For this reason, public access to it has been restricted. As a very large and growing store of information about New Zealanders, however, it has great potential as a research tool. By storing details about our ancestors, the database is a priceless treasure for future generations. It is hoped to make it available gradually online so that it can be used by students and researchers.

Make a nomination

It is important to maintain the usefulness of the database by continuing to add to it. We are particularly interested in people who were active between 1961 and 1980 (even if they are still alive), but anyone who made a contribution to New Zealand society is eligible for inclusion in the database. Although the person you nominate may not be selected for the published volumes of the Dictionary, his or her details will be retained permanently for the future benefit of researchers.

If you would like to make a nomination, please follow these steps:

  1. Search the name list. Please search the following list of names to see if the person you have in mind is already on the database. If he or she is well-known, chances are we will already have information.
  2. If he or she is not listed, download the nomination form (see link below), fill it in and email it (as an attachment) to dnzb@mch.govt.nz. Alternatively send it to us via mail to: DNZB Nomination, Ministry for Culture and Heritage, PO Box 5364, Wellington
