The Kerikeri Mission Station is one of the most signficant heritage places in New Zealand and has been at risk of damage, from flooding caused by the adjacent road bridge over the Kerikeri River acting as a dam during severe weather events.
The government provided 25% of the funding for this project to enable the bridge to be removed, with the remaining 75% provided by the New Zealand Agency.
Work on the bypass commenced in 2006 and was completed in 2008 when the road bridge was removed. The final stages of the project was the construction of a footbridge in the Basin. The Ministry was involved with the joint governance group established to oversee the project.
