About Anzac Day

Anzac Day is held annually on 25 April to remember all New Zealanders killed in war and honour our returned service personnel.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula (modern day Türkiye) in 1915.

Anzac Day has been a public holiday since 1921.

About the Anzac Day Commemoration

National Anzac Day commemorations start with a Dawn Service. Dawn marks the time of the initial landings at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and holds the symbolism of darkness making way for a new day.
