2026 marks seven years since the Christchurch terror attacks. Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage is inviting interested media organisations to play a recording of the adhan (call to prayer) on Sunday 15 March 2026 at 1.39pm, to honour those who lost their lives in the 15 March 2019 terror attacks in Christchurch.

Broadcasting the adhan was specifically requested by the community directly impacted by the attacks of 15 March 2019 as an appropriate way to observe the remembrance of this tragic event.

Since 2022, Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage has reached out to broadcasters across Aotearoa New Zealand to play a recording of the adhan on 15 March, as an act of remembrance and symbol of solidarity with New Zealand’s Muslim communities. Each year several media organisations accepted our invitation, broadcasting the adhan.
