The National Erebus Memorial has progressed from concept design to the next stage of design.

Building on the concept design shared last month, the design has been further developed by Studio Pacific Architecture and includes the memorial’s overall form, layout, materials and relationship with its site at Cracroft Reserve in Christchurch. This stage includes refining key aspects of the design, while retaining the core principles and character of the memorial as recently shown in the concept design.

This stage was informed by feedback received from Erebus families and members of Operation Overdue, project partners, and key stakeholders. Feedback from Erebus families and members of Operation Overdue has been overwhelmingly positive, and they have expressed a strong level of support for the concept design as the project moves forward. All feedback was considered by the designers alongside technical experts, ensuring the memorial design is fit-for-purpose and meets site specific requirements.

Three official renders of the developed design are being shared alongside this update. These images show the form of the memorial and how it sits within the landscape.

The project will now move into the detailed design phase, which will focus on finalising all aspects of the memorial ahead of regulatory processes, construction, and the eventual unveiling.
