Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage confirms it will preserve its website ‘Ngā Tapuwae Trails’, which presents First World War trails and location-based stories, after Anzac Day.

The website will move to the National Digital Heritage Archive at the National Library of New Zealand from late April 2026, to ensure long term accessibility to the pubic.

The move is part of a broader programme to reduce the number of standalone websites managed by the Ministry, while ensuring important stories from New Zealand’s First World War history remain protected and available to the public.

“Importantly, the Ngā Tapuwae content is not disappearing,” says Chief Historian Neill Atkinson.

“We will archive the full website through the National Library. It will remain publicly accessible with URL redirects guiding users from the current site to the archived version.

“As well as ensuring the content is readily available, key material will continue to be available on the NZ History website, which reaches a much larger audience.”

The physical Ngā Tapuwae trails at Gallipoli and on the Western Front will remain accessible to visitors and the website links will continue to work through redirects. Physical trail markers will stay in place, and users will continue to be able to follow the trails and access the associated stories and resources online via the archived site.
