The Waitangi Day Celebrations is a free community event delivering a programme that invites community to discover the history and significance of Te Tiriti O Waitangi alongside prompts of self-expression about what sovereignty means to them personally, encouraging conversations in a safe space. It is also a space to come together, enjoy and where appropriate, celebrate the culturally festive atmosphere.

At the event, hapū will open with a mihi whakatau, kapa haka and waiata. The on-stage programme features Māori musicians, including artists who whakapapa to Taranaki, alongside guest speakers such as the Chair of Ngāti Te Whiti and the Mayor of Ngāmotu/New Plymouth. A local hapū representative (TBC) will MC the event. An outdoor exhibition repurposing story boards first created for Te Matatini in Taranaki earlier this year will also be available for sharing the story of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Final Deed of Settlement specific to the Taranaki rohe.

A FREE event serves as a significant occasion that recognizes the historical relationship between the Crown and Ngāti Kahungunu. It commemorates the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi on June 20, 1846, along the Ngaruroro River in Heretaunga. This event fosters community engagement and provides a platform for cultural exchange and education. Participants have the opportunity to participate in whakawhanaungatanga activities that strengthen social bonds and support the event's kaupapa, and the celebrations feature diverse cultural performances that honor shared heritage, including Kapa Haka, English and Gaelic music, Pasifika dance, and Asian songs. A formal ceremony is conducted to mark New Zealand's National Day, emphasizing national unity and cultural diversity. As a free event, it attracts the largest regional gathering to observe Waitangi Day, promoting understanding, respect, and celebration of New Zealand's multicultural identity.

These events commemorate He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi by sharing kōrero, pūrākau, and whakapapa of the rangatira who signed in Te Matau-a-Māui/Hawke’s Bay. Through workshops, exhibitions, education, history sessions, and community wānanga, we shine a light on both He Whakaputanga 1835 and Te Tiriti 1840, exploring their impacts on hapū and iwi. Activities include the raising of flags for the three signatory rangatira, storytelling, historical talks, and mātauranga Māori resources, creating inclusive opportunities for whānau to learn, reflect, and honour these pivotal moments. The kaupapa will be guided, led, and coordinated by hapū and descendants, ensuring authenticity and mana remain at the heart of this commemoration.

Our marae is coming together to host a three-day celebration over Waitangi weekend, honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a way that reflects who we are. We’ll have kōrero from inspiring speakers including our Māori Ward and Kaumātua, interactive wānanga, and an exhibition that brings our stories to life. Te Ra o Waitangi 2026 "Ko te Whakaarotahi ki te Whakapono" – Uniting in Faith and Shared Purpose – Under the embrace of our wharepuni, we gather as tangata whenua and tangata tiriti — uniting in faith, trust, and shared belief in our collective future. Guided by the spirit of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we honour our connections to each other, our whenua, and our shared responsibilities as one community.

Raetihi Marae will host Te Ra o Waitangi 2026 "Kote Whakaarotahi Kite Whakapono". The day will begin with karakia acknowledging the wairua of Te Tiriti, followed by a post-settlement governance entity expo reconnecting whānau to Ngāti Haua, Ngāti Rangi, and Te Korowai o Wainuiarua.

Te Kāhui Kaumātua will lead rongoā Māori and wellbeing sessions, while a community pākihi market and multicultural performances — including contributions from the region’s long-standing Chinese families — will celebrate shared stories of belonging to the whenua.

This is a family friendly event, including  a powhiri, hakari (feast), entertainment, market stalls and activities for tamariki, held at Orongomai Marae to honour te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Te Aitarakihi Marae-ā-Iwi will host a free, community Waitangi Day event featuring Treaty education activities, quizzes, and static displays. The national Waitangi Day broadcast will screen outdoor, bringing whānau together in celebration and learning. Complemented with games, poi making, raranga, hāngī lunch, sausage sizzle, kapa haka and multicultural performances.

Okains Bay Māori & Colonial Museum

On 6 February 2026 the renowned Waitangi Day commemorations at Kawatea Okains Bay will be co-hosted by Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata and Okains Bay Māori & Colonial Museum. With free admission this annual event attracts over 2,000 visitors and involves around 150 community volunteers. Attendees will include the Governor General's representative, local dignitaries and residents from Waitaha Canterbury and beyond.
