About Vietnam Veterans’ DayVietnam Veterans’ Day commemorates New Zealand and Australian service in the Vietnam War. It is held each year on 18 August, the anniversary of the battle of Long Tan in 1966, when New Zealand gunners from 161 Battery and Australian infantrymen fought together against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces.New Zealand in the Vietnam WarThe Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indo-China War) lasted from 1960 to 1975.More than 3000 New Zealand military and civilian personnel served in Vietnam between 1963 and 1975. Thirty-seven men died while on active service and 187 were wounded.
